Blair Schroeder, a lifelong Abilenian and proud Abilene Independent School District (AISD) alumnus, along with his wife Erin, an elementary special education teacher, and their four children, returned to Abilene in 2019 after two decades of professional and academic growth elsewhere.
With a unique perspective as a parent of children across all school levels in AISD and observing the absence of board members with children in the district, Blair sees firsthand the impact of AISD's challenges on local families. He emphasizes the importance of supporting and improving the district to ensure Abilene's growth, highlighting the critical role the school board plays in hiring and onboarding a new superintendent, navigating the implications of potential school choice state legislation, declining enrollment, teacher morale, the need for improved educational outcomes, and keeping veiled politics out of the classroom.
Drawing on his professional success and the values instilled by his hometown, Blair is motivated by a sense of duty to contribute to his community's future. He is running for the Abilene School Board to protect and invest in the foundational aspects of Abilene, advocating for informed, principled leadership to navigate the complexities facing the education system today.
I have a sense of duty to step up and serve where there is a need. There are few places to serve a community as impactful as the school board. That is why I am running for Abilene School Board and why I am asking for your vote in May!
Blair has a distinguished career spanning roles in business leadership, public and community affairs, economic development, communications, and strategic management.
His professional journey took him from his roots in Abilene, Texas, to significant positions across the United States, culminating in his return to Texas in 2019. His career is marked by leadership roles in major companies and contributions to economic development and community service.
Chief Strategy Officer
In 2021, Blair took on the role of Chief Strategy Officer at Abilene Christian University, where he leads the strategic planning process, ensuring alignment with the university's mission and vision. His responsibilities include executive leadership, planning and execution around strategic initiatives, and oversight of strategic communications, government and community relations.
Federal Government Representation
As the District Director for U.S. Rep. Arrington, Blair served as the primary liaison in Abilene and 15 surrounding counties, leading staff and representing Arrington's interests, showcasing his ability to navigate complex public affairs and community relations.
Executive Business Experience
Before returning to Texas, Blair led in Cincinnati, working with Duke Energy's executive team, leading government relations at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and overseeing Sibcy Cline's subsidiaries (mortgage, title, insurance, relocation, home services). He served on Cincinnati’s regional economic development board and other non-profits, earning recognition as a top business leader under 40.
Since moving back to Abilene, Blair has become engaged in the community by serving on the Abilene Civil Service Commission, helped coach little league, part of PTO, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, and worships at the church of Christ with his family.
Blair's Principles and Priorities for AISD
We must prepare Abilene’s kids for success post graduation to help ensure a brighter future for ALL of Abilene and Texas.
Teachers and staff make the difference - we must improve morale to retain, attract, and help improve the educational experience for everyone.
Classrooms are for teaching not indoctrination - Abilene’s kids are not pawns in a national culture war and did not sign up for politics.
We must keep parents informed and engaged in the process.
Money matters in education and we must be good stewards of it, while at the same time advocating for a level playing field in funding from Texas.
Serving the whole child promotes learning and has a positive overall impact on testing outcomes.
Student growth and performance should be measured fairly.
Education serves as the bedrock for a strong workforce that helps regional economic development.
Provide leadership in hiring (if still necessary) and help acclimate a new superintendent.
We must navigate the impacts of state policies and their implications at a local level.
